Sound masking or silence?
A quieter room is not the goal. A less informative one is.
The instinct in a noisy room is to remove noise. Often the more effective move is to add some.
Why speech is the problem, not volume
An open-plan office at 55 dB of ventilation rumble is easier to work in than the same office at 50 dB with two people talking twenty feet away. The quieter room is worse.
The reason is that intelligible speech carries information, and information is what recruits attention. Your auditory system is very good at extracting a conversation from a background, and it does this whether or not you want it to. Once a sentence is intelligible, part of you is processing it.
This is why the volume of an office correlates poorly with how hard it is to concentrate there, and why a busy café can be easier than a quiet room with one phone call in it.
What masking does that cancellation cannot
Masking raises the noise floor so that speech stops being intelligible. It does not need to make speech inaudible — only to reduce it below the threshold where words can be resolved. The measure that matters is the ratio between speech and background, not the absolute level of either.
Active cancellation attacks the wrong part of the spectrum for this. It is excellent against steady low-frequency rumble and weak against transient speech, so it removes the harmless component and leaves the disruptive one. Noise cancelling or open-back? covers the hardware side.
Masking, by contrast, is well matched to the problem: broadband sound in roughly the speech range, at a level just sufficient to blur consonants.
How much, and what kind
Less than you think. The goal is the point at which you can hear that someone is talking but cannot follow what they are saying. Past that you are trading one distraction for a louder one, and adding a hearing-safety cost for no benefit.
Pink or brown rather than white. White noise has a great deal of high-frequency energy and becomes fatiguing over a long session. Pink is gentler and still masks speech effectively; brown is warmer again and better for low-level long use. Noise colors sets out the differences properly.
Steady rather than varied. Anything with structure — rain with distinct drops, café audio with distinguishable voices — reintroduces the problem it is meant to solve.
A generated session gives you a bed plus a rhythmic layer rather than a bed alone. Sensorimotor Calm Focus at 19 minutes is a reasonable starting point in a shared room; Code Logic Deep Flow if the work is analytical.
When silence is the right answer
Masking is a compromise, and it is worth being honest that it is one.
If your room is already quiet, adding sound is almost certainly a net negative for hard cognitive work. The best condition for the most demanding twenty minutes of anything is usually nothing at all.
If the work is genuinely novel and difficult — learning a new framework, unfamiliar mathematics, a first draft of something structurally hard — the load is already high and audio is one more thing to process.
If you are tired. A fatigued auditory system finds sustained sound more effortful, not less.
The reasonable pattern for many people is masking for execution and silence for the hard thinking, switching deliberately rather than leaving something playing all day.
What this does not solve
Masking makes a room less informative. It does not make an interrupting colleague stop interrupting, and it does not fix an office designed without any quiet space in it.
If you are reaching for audio every day to make an environment workable, the audio is a coping mechanism for a facilities problem. Worth naming, even though the coping mechanism is cheap and the facilities problem is not yours to solve.
