Brainwave frequency stacking
Five bands across a day, matched to how alertness actually moves — and stripped of the invented laws.
Single-frequency listening — a 10 Hz alpha session for calm, a 40 Hz gamma session for a work block — is useful on its own. Frequency stacking is the next step: using different bands at different points in the day, so the audio follows the shape of your alertness instead of fighting it.
That idea is real. Most of the scaffolding sold around it is not. There is no proven metabolic law requiring a 45-minute gamma ceiling, no evidence that you must step through every band before sleep, and no consumer study showing a precise percentage gain in deep sleep from open-loop audio. What follows is the useful schedule — with the invented precision left out — wired to sessions that actually exist in this library.
What stacking is, and what it is not
Your capacity for different kinds of work is not flat across 24 hours. Many people have a late-morning window that suits dense analytical work, an early-to-mid afternoon dip, and a gradual evening wind-down. Chronotype shifts those windows by hours. Stacking simply means: pick a band that fits the state you are already in, run a bounded session, then stop.
It is not closed-loop neurofeedback. Nothing here reads your EEG. Brainwavest is open-loop — it plays a written specification; it does not adapt to your cortex. That distinction matters more than any Hertz choice; see closed-loop vs open-loop.
It is also not a medical protocol. Brainwavest is a wellness tool, not a medical device. It does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any condition. The five-phase day
Times below are a template for a roughly morning-peaking day. Shift them earlier or later to match your own peak. The band order is the useful part; the clock face is not.
1. Morning settle — 14 Hz SMR. Still alertness for triage, planning and getting into motion without jitters. Sensorimotor Calm Focus holds 14 Hz after a short ramp from 10 Hz, 19 minutes, light pink bed, 256 Hz carrier, isochronic by default. Speakers are fine.
2. Deep-work sprint — 40 Hz gamma. One hard analytical block when you are already capable of it. 3. Afternoon continuity — 10 Hz alpha. When sleep pressure rises and high-beta drive starts to feel like friction, do not reach for faster audio. Alpha fits reading, editing, writing and steady execution. 5. Night recovery — ~2 Hz delta. A descending session on a short sleep timer, preferably on a speaker so you are not wearing headphones to bed. Sound choices that actually matter
Most stacking guides spend pages on lossless files and mystical carriers. Here is what matters for this engine.
Delivery mode. Isochronic and monaural put the beat in the air — speakers work. Binaural builds the beat between your ears — headphones are mandatory, and the mechanism is fragile above roughly a 30–35 Hz difference. Default sessions ship isochronic or phase-amplitude coupled so they survive a kitchen speaker. Switch modes in the player if you want; see binaural, isochronic and monaural.
Carriers. This catalog already picks carriers in the range the auditory system tracks well. You do not need to hunt for 136.1 Hz or 432 Hz as a spiritual upgrade — carrier frequency explained covers what the number actually does.
Noise beds. Pink sits under focus and SMR sessions without stealing attention. Brownian / brown softens evening and sleep sessions. That pairing is practical psychoacoustics, not a law of nature. More on colors: white, pink, brown and violet.
Volume. Conversational or quieter. Entrainment is about timing, not loudness. If the sound feels like a stimulant, turn it down.
Files and codecs. Irrelevant here. Every sample is synthesised live on your device — there is no MP3, no FLAC, no streaming compression stage to protect. Advice written for downloaded binaural WAVs does not apply.
ANC headphones. Active noise cancellation can color low-frequency content. If a binaural session feels thin or unstable with ANC on, try passive isolation or switch to isochronic. For default isochronic playback, ANC is a comfort choice, not a protocol breaker.
Rules worth keeping — and rules worth ignoring
Keep: bound the block. A session with a start and an end beats all-day ambient. When audio runs for six hours it stops being a signal and becomes the room.
Keep: one task per fast session. Especially for gamma. The audio is a container; fill it with one thing.
Keep: do not fight the afternoon dip with faster audio. That usually produces a wired, unproductive hour. Alpha or a short walk is the better move.
Ignore: "never jump from gamma to delta." There is no evidence for a required electrocortical step-down ladder. What helps before sleep is ordinary wind-down — dimmer light, fewer screens, slower breathing — not an intermediate Hertz value. Using theta in the evening is still pleasant; it is not mandatory physics.
Ignore: "gamma must be exactly 45 minutes." Sensible as a ceiling for any intense block. Presented as cerebral metabolic law, it is invented. Stop when it stops being useful; many people do better at 15–25 minutes. If gamma makes you tense, shorten it, lower the volume, or drop to SMR — see SMR and focus.
Ignore: supplement stacks with doses. You will see confident pairings of Alpha-GPC with 40 Hz, theanine with alpha, magnesium with delta. We will not prescribe doses. Interactions with medication and individual tolerance are outside what a sound product should advise on, and none of those combinations have been tested with this audio.
Ignore: precise wearable improvement percentages. "+15–30% slow-wave sleep" claims for open-loop consumer audio are decoration until someone publishes the measurement. Track ordinary things instead: did the work block happen, did you finish the task, how did you sleep.
A concrete day on Brainwavest

How to tell if it is working
Give any stack at least two consistent weeks before judging it. Useful checks:
- Did the deep-work block actually start when you pressed play?
- Did you finish the one task you assigned to the gamma session?
- Was the afternoon less of a doomscroll?
- Did sleep onset feel ordinary, better, or worse?
Consumer EEG headbands and wearable HRV are optional color, not a pass/fail for this protocol. Consistency of use beats optimisation of Hertz.
Frequently asked questions
Can I run all five phases every day? Yes, if the day has room for them. Many people only need morning SMR, one gamma or beta work block, and a night session. Stacking is a menu, not a loyalty programme.
What if 40 Hz makes me anxious or tense? Shorten it, lower the volume, or replace that block with 12–15 Hz SMR until you tolerate faster audio. Gamma is the wrong direction when you are already over-aroused — see audio for anxiety.
Do I need to drop caffeine? No. Some people find bounded morning sessions reduce the urge for a third afternoon coffee; that is a side effect of structure, not a requirement.
Can I use speakers for the whole day? For the default isochronic sessions, yes. Switch to headphones only if you deliberately choose binaural or poly-rhythmic modes — headphones or speakers.
Is this synchronising my SCN / clock genes? No honest open-loop audio product can claim that. Light, sleep timing and schedule regularity are the dominant circadian inputs. Audio is a supporting habit layered on top of those, not a replacement for them.
