Sound for reading and comprehension
The clearest rule in this entire field: no words while you are working with words.
If you take one thing from this catalog into your reading, take this: do not listen to anything with words in it while reading.
That rule has better support than almost anything else on this site, and following it will do more for your comprehension than any choice of frequency.
Why language conflicts with language
Reading recruits verbal working memory. So does listening to speech. When both are running, they compete for the same limited resource, and comprehension suffers measurably.
Three features of the effect are worth knowing:
Liking the music does not help. Preference and disruption are separate. People reliably report that music they enjoy is not distracting, and reliably comprehend less with it playing.
Familiarity may make it worse. A song you know well is easier to follow without effort, which means you follow it.
It is worse for difficult text. Easy reading survives interference. Dense, unfamiliar or technical material does not.

What to use instead
Something steady, non-verbal and unremarkable.

Match the session length to a real unit of reading
This is where most people get it wrong, and it is not about audio at all.
A 16-minute session is roughly a chapter, a long article, or a section of a paper. Ending the session at the end of a unit means you have a natural place to stop, check what you retained, and decide whether to continue.
An endless playlist gives you none of that. You read until you notice you have stopped taking anything in, which is usually a long way past the point where you did.
Use the session boundary as a comprehension checkpoint: at the end, say what the section argued without looking. If you cannot, re-read it now rather than continuing.
Reading to remember is a different task
If the goal is retention rather than understanding-in-the-moment, the audio is not the important variable. Retrieval practice is. Reading a passage three times is substantially less effective than reading it once and trying to recall it twice, and no background sound changes that.

When to read in silence
Genuinely often.
First pass through something hard. The load is already high.
Anything you will be examined or tested on. You will almost certainly not have audio then, and there is a reasonable argument for practising in conditions resembling the ones you will perform in.
When you are tired. A fatigued auditory system makes sustained sound more effortful, not less.
Reach for a session when the room is the problem, or when starting is the problem. Reach for silence when the text is the problem.
