The endlessly falling tone
A pitch that falls forever without ever getting lower. And a practical use for it.
You may know it from the Batman films, or from Escher's staircase as its visual equivalent: a tone that seems to descend continuously and never arrives anywhere.
How the illusion works
Stack several tones exactly an octave apart. Slide the whole stack downward together. As each tone approaches the bottom of a fixed frequency window it fades out, while a new one fades in at the top.
At any instant you hear a chord descending. But because octave-related tones are perceptually "the same note" at different heights, and because the ones entering and leaving are silent at the moment they do so, there is no audible seam. The descent never resolves and never repeats.
The version that slides continuously rather than in steps is the Shepard-Risset glissando, after Roger Shepard, who described the stepped illusion in 1964, and Jean-Claude Risset, who made it continuous.
Why put it in a meditation product
Because the problem it solves is real: a fixed carrier becomes predictable, and predictable is the enemy of a forty-minute session.
There are two mechanisms worth separating.
The mundane one. A perfectly steady tone is something you learn quickly and then stop hearing. A carrier that is always moving never settles into something you can finish parsing.
The specific one. Because the drift is an illusion, it never actually leaves its range. An ordinary descending sweep would run out of usable frequency in a minute; this one can descend for the entire session while staying exactly where it started.
The implementation
In this engine the drift spans four octaves centered on the session's own carrier — so a 216 Hz session sweeps roughly 54 Hz to 864 Hz — descending by default at 0.02 octaves per second.
Two details matter.
Each partial wraps individually. Advancing every tone together and wrapping them all at once would produce an audible jump. Each one has its own position in the cycle and returns to the top on its own schedule, so the wrap is distributed rather than simultaneous.
The window weight is exactly zero at both edges. A partial is silent at the moment it wraps, so the frequency jump happens under silence rather than as a click. The illusion is seamless by construction, not by crossfading.
Crucially, the beat rate is untouched. Only the timbre moves. A 2 Hz sleep session with drift enabled is still a 2 Hz sleep session.
Where you can use it
Drift is offered on isochronic and phase-amplitude sessions only, and the reason is worth understanding: binaural, monaural and poly-rhythmic all encode the beat in an exact relationship between two carriers. Replacing one of them with a moving stack of octaves would destroy the very thing carrying the beat.
So the switch appears where it can work and is absent where it cannot.
Is it doing anything?
We would rather be straight about this: the drift is craft, not mechanism. We make no claim that it changes an outcome.
