Noise cancelling or open-back?

Cancellation is not neutral. It removes the low end of a room and leaves the rest.

What active cancellation actually removes

Active noise cancellation works by generating an inverted copy of incoming sound. It is very effective against steady, low-frequency, predictable noise: aircraft cabins, train rumble, air conditioning, traffic drone.

It is much weaker against transient, high-frequency, unpredictable sound: speech, keyboards, doors, a colleague laughing. Some of that is physics and some is the difficulty of predicting a signal that has not happened yet.

This produces a specific and underappreciated effect. In an open-plan office, cancellation strips out the rumble and leaves the conversation — and conversation is the thing that actually disrupts focused work. People frequently report that ANC made the room quieter and their concentration no better. That is the mechanism.

What cancellation does to a generated session

Two things worth knowing.

It changes the frequency balance. Cancellation is not flat. Most implementations alter low-frequency response noticeably, and a noise bed whose character depends on its low end will not sound the same with ANC on and off. If a session feels thin or harsh with cancellation enabled, try it without before concluding you dislike the session.

It can introduce its own artefacts. Cabin pressure sensation, a faint hiss, occasional pumping on some designs. At the low listening levels these sessions want, the noise floor of the cancellation circuit is a larger proportion of what you hear than it would be at music levels.

For binaural delivery specifically, cancellation is neither help nor hindrance — what binaural needs is channel separation, which any closed or open design provides so long as both drivers are seated.

When open-back is the better answer

Open-back headphones leak sound in both directions. In a quiet room that is an advantage: a wider, less pressurised presentation, less of the in-your-head quality that long sessions can make fatiguing.

For a long focus block in a room you control, open-back is usually the more comfortable choice — you can wear them for two hours without the closed-in feeling. Code Logic Deep Flow or Deep Reading Immersion at low level on open-backs is about as unobtrusive as this gets.

In a shared room they are the wrong tool entirely. You will hear everything and everyone will hear you.

When closed-back without cancellation wins

Underrated. Passive isolation is broadband — it attenuates speech as well as rumble, without the frequency-response cost or the electronics.

If you want one pair for mixed situations and you are not spending most of your listening time on planes, a well-sealing closed-back is often the most consistent choice.

A short decision

Quiet room, long session: open-back, low level.

Office with people talking: closed-back, and consider a masking-forward session rather than relying on cancellation.

Plane, train, mechanical noise: ANC, genuinely and obviously.

The thing that matters more than any of this

Level. A five-hundred-pound headphone at too high a volume is worse for you than a cheap one at a sensible level, and the difference in what the session does is small compared with the difference in what your ears are taking. Safe listening levels has the numbers.
