Do binaural beats actually work?
Three different claims get sold as one. They have very different amounts of evidence behind them.
The question is usually answered with either a sales page or a sneer. Both are avoidable, because there is a real literature here — it is just smaller and messier than the confident answers suggest.
The central problem is that three separate claims get bundled and sold as one. They deserve separate verdicts.
Claim 1: periodic sound produces time-locked brain activity
This is well established. Not controversial, not fringe.
Play a tone modulated at a steady rate and the auditory system produces a sustained electrical response that follows it. The 40 Hz case has been a standard measurement since Galambos, Makeig and Talmachoff described it in 1981, and the auditory steady-state response is reliable enough to be used today as a clinical and pharmacological marker.
Note what this claim is not. It says the auditory system tracks a rhythm. It says nothing about your mood, your focus, or the rest of your cortex.
Claim 2: this "entrains" your brainwaves more broadly
This is genuinely contested, and it is the claim most products are actually making.
A 2023 systematic review in PLOS ONE looked at the EEG studies of binaural beats specifically. Of fifteen studies, five supported the entrainment hypothesis, eight contradicted it, and one was mixed. The authors' conclusion was not "it fails" but something more awkward: the studies are so heterogeneous in stimulus, design and analysis that they cannot properly be compared.
That is the honest picture. Not debunked. Not demonstrated. Under-powered and inconsistently run.
Claim 3: it improves how you think and feel
Suggestive, not settled.
The best evidence here is a 2019 meta-analysis in Psychological Research covering 22 studies and 35 effect sizes, which found a significant pooled effect on memory, attention, anxiety and pain, with a moderate effect size (Hedges' g = 0.45), varying with the frequency used, how long the exposure lasted, and when it happened relative to the task.
A moderate pooled effect from a small, heterogeneous literature is a real result. It is not a settled mechanism, and meta-analyses of small studies in fields with publication-bias pressure deserve a discount.
The strongest single thread is anxiety, where reductions have replicated across several populations including surgical patients — which is also the area where a placebo-friendly outcome measure is most plausible.
The part almost nobody mentions
Much of the most impressive research in this space is closed-loop: it reads your EEG in real time and delivers sound at a precise moment in your own ongoing brain rhythm.
The pink-noise sleep work is the clearest example. When Papalambros, Zee and colleagues enhanced slow-wave sleep and word recall in older adults, the sound was phase-locked to each participant's own slow oscillations, moment by moment.
No consumer audio product does this. Not ours. We are open-loop: we play a specified rhythm and you listen. Citing closed-loop results as evidence for an open-loop product is the single most common sleight of hand in this category, and it is worth watching for whenever you see a study referenced.
What about isochronic tones?
Slightly awkward for us, since that is what most of our catalog ships as: the behavioral literature on isochronic stimulation specifically is thinner than the binaural literature, simply because fewer people have studied it.
The physical case is stronger — amplitude modulation drives a steady-state response more reliably than a binaural beat does, which is why we default to it. But we are not going to claim the trials exist when they do not.
So: does it work?
Here is the answer we would give a friend.
Something real is happening in the auditory system — that part is not in doubt. Whether it produces the specific mental states the names promise is unproven, and any honest reading has to allow that a meaningful share of what people feel is expectation and the simple act of setting aside forty quiet minutes.
That is not nothing. Sitting still with headphones on and a timer running is a genuinely useful behavior, and if a structured sound field makes you do it more often, it has earned its place.
