Shift work and irregular sleep
The hardest sleep problem there is, and the one where audio is most obviously a partial answer.
Shift work is the hardest version of this problem, and it deserves to be treated as harder than it usually is on pages like this one.
You are being asked to sleep when your circadian system is signalling wake, in daylight, in a house where other people are awake, on a schedule that changes. No audio solves that. Some of it makes the edges more manageable.
The two things that matter most, neither of which is sound
Light control. Sleeping in a genuinely dark room during the day is the single highest-leverage change available. Blackout material that actually blacks out, and dark glasses on the commute home if you finish in daylight — morning light on the way back is precisely the signal telling your body to be awake.
Schedule regularity where you have any choice. Rotating shifts are harder than fixed nights, and forward rotation is generally easier than backward. Where you have influence over rota design, that is worth more than anything you can buy.
Persistent problems with shift sleep are worth a conversation with a clinician. Shift work sleep disorder is a recognised condition, and the interventions with evidence behind them are not audio.
What sound can actually do
Mask a daytime house. This is the biggest real contribution. Daytime is loud in a way night is not — deliveries, traffic, neighbours, family. Continuous low-level sound raises the floor so that individual events are less likely to wake you. Sound masking or silence? covers how much you need, which is less than most people use.
Provide a boundary when the clock cannot. Going to bed at 9am has no cultural scaffolding. Nothing about the environment says "this is night". A consistent wind-down session is a ritual that works regardless of what the sun is doing, and consistency is doing the work rather than the frequency.

The timing finding still applies
The same evidence that governs ordinary sleep applies here, and it is worth repeating because the temptation to run audio all through a daytime sleep is strong.
Auditory stimulation beginning while you are still awake and continuing into sleep has been observed to delay sleep onset, while the same stimulation delivered once sleep is established increases slow oscillation activity. One stimulus, opposite outcomes, decided by timing. Using sound to fall asleep sets this out in full.
For daytime sleep the practical compromise is usually:
A defined wind-down session before lying down, ending as you get into bed. Sleep-Readiness Protocol descends from 18 Hz to 0.8 Hz over 27 minutes and is shaped for a body that is not ready.
Then continuous low-level masking for the rest of the sleep, if the house needs it — plain, unstructured, very quiet. The masking job and the wind-down job are different, and using one session for both tends to do neither well.
Naps around a shift
Before a night shift, a nap in the late afternoon or early evening is well supported and is one of the more effective things available. Twenty minutes, or ninety if you have the room for a full cycle — the middle is the trap. See power naps and sound.

After a shift, before proper sleep, generally avoid. It reduces the sleep pressure you need for the main block.
What we are not going to claim
That a session will let you sleep normally on an abnormal schedule. That any frequency compensates for circadian misalignment. That this is a substitute for light control, or for a clinician if this is grinding you down.
Shift work is a real physiological imposition. Audio makes a loud daytime house quieter and gives an unmoored schedule a repeatable edge. Both are worth having, and both are small next to the problem.
